music industry terminolgy

convergence of technology : the coming together of new media technologies. e.g. telelvision is now digital and interactive, with the otential for 1000 channels and with technology available to download and store programs.


convergence of industrial activity : the coming together of different specialist areas such as advertising and publishing in one company or label


synergy : the coming together of two seperate media texts in such a way as to benifit both


conglomerate : an international company witha wide and varied range of commercial interests


globalisation : the grwing tendancy of industrial and commercial companies to merge and opperate on an international rather tha a national or regional basis


verticle integration : is the degree to which a firm owns its upstream suppliers and its donstream buyers.


horizontal integration : is a consolidation of many firms that handle the same part of the production process


digitalisation : is the representation of an object, image, sound, document or signal by a discrete set of points or samples


analogue music : is a representation of sound in an actual form e.g. a record or a tape and to some extent a cd except a cd can hold digital files


major record label : is the term originaly coined to describe the physical label on a vinyl record, which would display the manufacturers name.over time, record labels have developed into big companies that brand and promote music.


subsidary label : this is a label which is completely or party owned and controlled by another label


independant label : is a label operatingwithout the funding of or outside the organisations of the major record labels, a great number of bands and musical acts began on independant labels


niche audience : the targeting of a small but significant group of consumers with a media product specifically at their interests.


mainstream audience : an audience which keeps up with the popular music at that time, which is typicall disseminated by mass media


fans : a fanaticle enthusiast or supporter


active audiences : where the audience are active participants in the media text


audiophiles : people who would prefer to listen to music at bhome whose sound quality matches an original live performance


early adopters : social leaders who are popular and educated


consumption : theact or process of consuming , the using up of goodsand services by consumer purchasing or in theproduction of other goods

web 2.0 : the term web 2.0 is associated with web applications that facillitate participatory information sharing, interoperability, user-centered design, and collaboration on the world wide web

Meta Tags : are line of HTML code in the heading of a web age that provide information to the browser and search engines but which are not seen by the page viewer

download : means to receive data to a local system from a remote system, or to initiate such a data transfer

Streaming : is multimedia  that is constantly received by and presented to an end user while being delivered by a streaming provider

Peer-to-peer :  file sharing allows users to download media files such as music, movies, and games using a P2P software client that searches for other connected computers



Portability : in high-level computer programming is the usability of the same software in different environments. The prerequirement for portability is the generalized abstraction between the application logic and system interfaces. When software with the same functionality is produced for several computing platforms, portability is the key issue for development cost reduction

Multitrack : recording (also known as multitracking or just tracking for short) is a method of sound recording that allows for the separate recording of multiple sound sources to create a cohesive whole

sampling : is the act of taking a portion, or sample, of one sound recording and reusing it as an instrument or a different sound recording of a song or piece

A digital audio workstation (DAW) : is an electronic system designed solely or primarily for recording, editing and playing back digital audio.

Artists and repertoire (A&R) : is the division of a record label that is responsible for talent scouting and overseeing the artistic development of recording artists. It also acts as a liaison between artists and the record label

A recording contract : (commonly called a record deal) is a legal agreement between a record label and a recording artist (or group), where the artist makes a record (or series of records) for the label to sell and promote

marketing :  is defined by the AMA as "an organizational function and a set of processes for creating, communicating, and delivering value to customers and for managing customer relationships in ways that benefit the organization and its stakeholders
piracy: the act of plagiarizing , taking someone's words or ideas as if they were your own, this is also done with digital files on the internet where people illegally download content.
